IN THE EVENING AT THE MONTEFALCO MUSEUM

Evening openings every Thursday in July and August, from 8pm to 11pm, with a guided focus on the extraordinary works of Benozzo Gozzoli and Pietro Perugino

Put a special evening in the summer to spend at the Montefalco Museum. Every Thursday in July and August, from 8pm to 11pm, the "In the evening at the Museum" initiative will be held with night openings to admire the extraordinary works of art in a different light. During the opening, at 21.30, it will be possible to participate in the guided focus "The stars of the Museum", dedicated to the works of the two greatest artists preserved in the church of San Francesco: Benozzo Gozzoli and Pietro Perugino. The experience is included in the entrance to the museum. The "In the evening at the Museum" initiative is organized by Maggioli Cultura.

The museum complex of San Francesco is an authentic and precious jewel, where the links between art and history of Montefalco are intertwined. The main work of Benozzo Gozzoli is the decoration of the apse of the church with the "Stories of the life of San Francesco", carried out in 1452. In this authentic casket of art, the frescoes follow one another on the three walls and on the vault, executed with exuberant richness of colors. The attention to detail stimulates the curiosity of those who observe the "Stories", masterfully told. Also by Benozzo Gozzoli is the fresco in the Chapel of San Girolamo, executed in the same year. The back wall is mostly occupied by the faux gold polyptych which still maintains the late medieval style, but which already denotes a first adherence to the canons of the Renaissance in the numerous illusionistic effects.

Pietro Perugino, whose 500th anniversary of his death is being celebrated this year, is the author of the fresco in Montefalco "Annunciation, Eternal in glory among the angels and Nativity", painted in 1503 on the counter-façade of the church. The work shows excellent quality with innovative aspects regarding the artist's style and above all in the application of color, more "mobile" and vibrant. While using the same cardboard as other works executed in the same years, the artist changes his expressive register. The observer's gaze is lost in a luxuriant landscape that slopes down to the body of water on the horizon line, characteristic of Perugino's mature phase.
