On display in Montefalco are 60 photographs, many previously unpublished, from the celebrated story of Umbria by Steve McCurry, one of the world's most beloved photographers. A storytelling of places, people, stories, celebrations, events, landscapes, and communities that conveys all the warmth and emotion McCurry experienced during his travels in this region.
More than 10 years after his first exhibition, renowned American photographer Steve McCurry returns to Umbria with his story dedicated to this extraordinary land. From December 4, 2025, to May 3, 2026, the San Francesco Museum Complex in Montefalco hosts the exhibition "Steve McCurry – Umbria", curated by Biba Giacchetti. The opening will be held on Wednesday, December 3, at 5:30 pm.
To Montefalco, McCurry brings some of the most iconic shots from his personal archive and some previously unpublished images, exhibited to the public for the first time. The exhibition is promoted by the Municipality of Montefalco with the contribution of the Umbria Region, in collaboration with Orion57. The organization is entrusted to Maggioli Cultura e Turismo.
Sixty photographs will allow you to admire Umbria seen through the eyes of one of the world's most beloved photographers. A storytelling of places, people, stories, celebrations, events, landscapes, and communities that conveys all the warmth and emotion McCurry experienced during his travels.
“I felt it was time to return with an exhibition to a place that had given me so much. The years I spent working on Sensational Umbria were filled with warmth, curiosity, and unexpected discoveries. Returning to Montefalco with familiar images and a series of previously unseen works was like closing a circle, or perhaps opening a new one. There was still so much to say about the spirit of this region, and I wanted to share it.
Steve McCurry
The exhibition recounts McCurry's journeys to Umbria on several occasions and the fascination that Umbria and its people held for him.
From Montefalco to Gubbio, passing through Bevagna, Assisi, Perugia, Spoleto, Trevi, and many unexpected places. The exhibition is not a simple anthology: it is a free, affectionate, and intimate story. An extraordinary gallery of dynamic and authentic images.

The themes they address are, on the one hand, female identity and family conflict, and on the other, the transcendental dimension. Toward a poetic horizon.
